The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) plans to invest over €300 million in Serbia, with some of the funding being allocated to the incumbent Telekom Srbija.
Quoting EBRD director Daniel Berg, Vesti reports that this will form part of a planned investment of over €1 billion in the Western Balkans.
In Serbia, some €100 million will be allocated for SMEs, with large companies, such as Telekom Srbija and Belgrade Airport, receiving the remainder.
However, experts point out that these investments will effectively be loans to the recipients.
A proposed privatisation of Telekom Srbija failed late last year, since when doubts as to the company’s future have persisted.
The EBRD met with Serbia’s PM earlier this year and supports the idea of a sale.
