SVOD is now the fastest growing segment of the on demand market.
According to data published in Idate’s DigiWorld Yearbook 2016, the number of SVOD subscriptions globally totaled 103.2 million in 2015, with North America, by far the largest market, accounting for 67.8 million and Europe only 17.4 million.
Significantly, revenues were 71.5% higher than in 2013, while those for EST (download to buy) increased by 67.6%.
Moreover, SVOD became the main source of income for on demand services for the first time in 2015.
In 2015, Netflix controlled two-thirds of all SVOD subscriptions worldwide, excluding plans bundled with pay-TV packages or telecom services.
The global video market was worth €33 billion in 2015, or 2.4% more than a year earlier.
Physical video sales and rentals accounted for €18.2 billion of the total and VOD €14.8 billion.
