Global Eagle takes RTL International aboard cruise ships

May 14, 2016 22.53 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

RTL InternationalGlobal Eagle Entertainment (GEE), a US provider of aircraft connectivity systems and media content to the travel industry, will deliver German TV channel RTL International to cruise ships around the world.

As part of the exclusive agreement, GEE will provide the international service operated by German commercial broadcast group Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland to 27 cruise lines and more than 130 ships serving around 10 million passengers per year.

In partnership with EMC and its global satellite-delivered TV network, GEE serves around half of the cruise line market around the world with TV content.

RTL International which launched on January 18, 2016 will provide German, Austrian and Swiss tourists and business travellers aboard the cruise ships with news, lifestyle and entertainment programmes.

“Cruise lines are one of the fastest growing sectors of the maritime industry around the globe and German tourism is a huge driver of that phenomenal growth,” said Andy Brown, director of strategy and business development at GEE. “German tourists represent the third largest passenger group aboard cruise ships today.”
