Following a delay of over a year, Bulgaria’s Committee on Culture and Media at the national Assembly has finally agreed on a procedure for the appointment of members of the Council for Electronic Media (CEM).
According to Capital, upcoming competitions for the DG positions at the public TV broadcaster BNT and its radio counterpart BNR finally forced the process. These can only be organised by a fully renewed regulator.
Capital adds that the CEM urgently needs people with a high degree of professional expertise as Bulgarian media legislation has to be transposed with the renewed Directive on Audiovisual Media Services by the end of the year.
Within the European context, there is already talk about a new media law in Bulgaria, as well as merging the CEM with the Commission for Regulation of Communications (CRC).
