Ofcom says that complaints about the subjective picture and sound quality of standard definition PSB channels on DTT have all but dried up.
In fact there have been no complaints whatsoever in the past three years.
The regulator is reviewing its Broadcast TV Technical Codes. It also says the commercial PSBs that offer a simulcast HD service on DTT (ITV/STV/UTV and Channel 4) are currently achieving generally good picture quality on both the HD and SD versions of their services.
Ofcom says there is no need to introduce a code for specific picture grade requirements on these channels, nor is there a need to continue with the current analysis of standard definition.
Also staying outside the code are HEVC encoding and UHD resolution, though Ofcom says it will consider revising the codes when necessary, and multiplex operators will remain free to propose use of HEVC for specific services.
