The Romanian parliament has overwhelmingly approved a new board for the public broadcaster TVR.
Balkan Insight reports that it has 13 members, comprised of representatives of all political parties, the government, president and TVR labour union. It head is George Orbean, a journalist and media consultant.
TVR broadcasts four national channels, five regional and two international channels.
It has been facing serious financial difficulties for some time and, as reported by Broadband TV News, faces the prospect of insolvency. However, as a public institution it cannot be declared bankrupt.
Some 70% of TVR’s revenue currently comes from advertising, receiver licence fees and transmission fees, with the remainder provided from the state budget.
Earlier this month, the EBU asked the Romanian prime minister to help save TVR.
