German cable operators Tele Columbus and Primacom have launched a community Wi-Fi service comprising 50,000 hotspots which enable their internet customers to surf the net at no additional charge while on the go using their smartphone, tablet or laptop.
The service which is available to all internet customers using a tariff with an activated Wi-Fi option offers a speed of up to 10Mbps without time or volume restrictions. The login details can be found in the online customer portal. With a user account, the hotspots can be accessed using up to three different devices at the same time.
For the Wi-Fi network which is available throughout the footprint of Tele Columbus, the cable operator opens the Wi-Fi cable modems of its customers for third-party access by fellow customers. Additional bandwidth is provided for the community hotspot, so the customer’s own internet speed is not affected.
Vodafone subsidiary Kabel Deutschland and Unitymedia also offer their customers a hotspot network.
