The Bulgarian Council for Electronic Media (CEM) has awarded a licence to Pik TV, which has been described as the country’s first “tabloid TV” channel.
Capital reports that the regulator’s decision, taken at a meeting on Thursday, February 25, was expected, as the media law does not provide grounds for refusing it to be registered.
However, it adds that there was a single dissenting voice, namely Georgi Lozanov, CEM’s chairman of the board and board member, whose mandate for both positions officially expires in early April.
As previously reported in Broadband TV News, Pik TV is backed by Nedialko Nedialkov, the owner of the sensationalist sites Pik and Blitz, and is likely to make its debut on April 4.
On air for 24 hours daily, it will be distributed via cable and satellite.
