Switzerland: IPTV continues to erode cable

Swisscom TV 2.0 Box & Fernbedienung IISwiss telco Swisscom has continued to increase its number of TV customers at the expense of cable operators in 2015.

IPTV platform Swisscom TV grew by 166,000 to 1.33 million customers – an increase by 14.2%. 60% of them used cloud-based service Swisscom TV 2.0.

Swisscom’s number of fixed-line broadband customers rose by 68,000 to 1.96 million – a growth by 3.6%.

The Swiss cable operators lost 130,500 TV customers last year, according to industry association Suissedigital, leading to a drop of the total number of cable households by 4.9% to 2.51 million.

The cable companies’ main growth drivers remain internet and telephony: The number of broadband internet customers climbed by 64,500 to 1.21 million – an increase by 5.6%. The number of telephony customers rose by 52,700 to 718,000 – a growth by 7.9%.

43,800 customers signed up for mobile telephony from their cable operator in 2015.
