Romania is in many ways a unique market and as such should probably be viewed differently to others in Central and Eastern Europe.
A visit to the country last November to meet with some of the leading stakeholders in the industry certainly confirmed that much to me.
To all intents and purposes, it is a market in which consumers are being offered increasingly advanced and comprehensive services at prices that seem quite low even by regional standards, let alone those in Western Europe. I remember raising a few eyebrows when revealing how much I pay each month to my provider in the UK.
In such circumstances, competition between especially the leading electronic communications companies in Romania – RCS&RDS, Telekom Romania and UPC – is keener than ever, with all having to think of new and innovative ways of offering their customers more in order to stay one step ahead of their rivals. Retaining those customers, one would probably argue, is as if not as important as securing new ones.
What is more, with companies such as Orange Romania now also important players and Vodafone making its presence felt, the market is starting to feel increasingly crowded.
With all this in mind, we at Broadband TV News, with our partners Telenor Satellite, will be returning to Bucharest on March 2 to hold the latest in our series of business briefings in Central and Eastern Europe.
After much thought, and in order to keep the event as topical and relevant to the market as possible, we have decided to make its theme “Content and delivery challenges for pay-TV in Romania”.
As in all our briefings, we will have key industry representatives providing presentations on the subject in question, from their companies’ perspective. There will undoubtedly be a lively and interesting debate in what will be a must-attend event, both for local and international executives with an interest in the Romanian pay-TV sector.
