German media company ProSiebenSat.1 will transmit its TV channels on the upcoming DVB-T2/HEVC platform in Full HD mode (1080p50).
After public broadcaster ZDF and media group Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland, ProSiebenSat.1 is the third large company opting for Full HD. ARD is currently evaluating its options.
With 1920×1080 pixels and 50 frames per second, Full HD currently provides the maximum picture quality for HD reception. DVB-T2 viewers will thus receive the TV channels in better picture quality than via cable or satellite where German broadcasters currently don’t provide Full HD.
“The decision to opt for the best possible HD signal is an important affirmation by broadcasters to the future of digital terrestrial television,” said Holger Meinzer, Chief Commercial Officer B2B of technical service provider Media Broadcast which will operate the DVB-T2 platform for commercial broadcasters. “We thereby significantly strengthen DTT in the competition between broadcast infrastructures.”
The deployment of the new generation DTT system dubbed DVB-T2 HD will commence in Q2 2016, gradually replacing the current DVB-T standard by mid-2019.
