On demand TV viewing is popular in The Netherlands, with four out of ten Dutch households watching via VOD and catch-up TV platforms.
Public broadcaster’s NPO Gemist (formerly Uitzendinggemist) is the most popular, followed by RTL XL, Kijk.nl from SBS Broadcasting and the premium service NLziet, according to figures of the Smart Electronics Monitor from market research company Multiscope, who surveyed 6536 respondents.
NPO.nl has the most viewers (36%), RTL XL attracts 16%, Kijk.nl 5% and NLziet just 1%. More than half of the users of these platforms watch an average of three hours per week. The other half of the users watch less than once a week.
The ratio between men and women is at the NPO.nl users more or less in balance. RTL XL and Kijk.nl have more female viewers; nearly six in ten. In addition, RTL XL mainly attracts younger viewers. About half (46%) were aged between 18 and 35 years. Among the NPO.nl viewers only 33% is between 18 and 35 years old.
NPO.nl is more than 40% of the time viewed on the main TV screen. RTL XL and Kijk.nl viewing one less via the TV screen (30% of the time) and often on other devices, mainly tablet and smartphone screens are popular with viewers of RTL XL and Kijk.nl.
