Pay-TV stable, 5-play surge in Spain

December 22, 2015 10.19 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Telefonica-1Although the total number of pay-TV subscribers in Spain in Q2 was barely changed on the previous quarter, IPTV and cable gained, and DTH lost, customers.

Data produced by the regulator CNMC shows that IPTV services were received by 2.37 million subscribers as of June 30, up from 2.27 million three months earlier and close to double the 1.30 million figure posted a year earlier.

Meanwhile, the number of cable subscribers increased from 1.16 million to 1.20 million in the three months to June 30 and those receiving DTH services fell from 1.55 million to 1.40 million.

The CNMC notes that the total number of quadruple and quintuple packages received reached 8.8 million at the end of June, or 1.7 million more than a year earlier. The strongest growth was in quintuple packages, up from 400,000 to 2.7 million in the year to June 30.

There were also 3.8 million fixed broadband connections with access speeds of 30 Mbps or higher as of the end of June, or 58.8% more than a year earlier. They accounted for 29.1% of the total fixed broadband customer base.

The CNMC also notes that Telefónica’s Movistar, following its acquisition of DTS, accounted for 45% of operators’ revenues in Q2. Vodafone, which owns Ono, had the next largest share (17.9%).
