Over half of fixed broadband connections in Romania now provide access speeds of at least 100 Mbps.
According to data produced by the regulator ANCOM, there were a total of 4.1 million fixed broadband connections in the country as of June 30, and of these 48%, or over 2 million, gave access of over 100 Mbps.
Given that these figures were valid almost six months ago, the current percentage is likely to be well over 50%. Indeed, ANCOM notes that the number of such connections grew by 86% in the year to June 30.
ANCOM also says that the number of fixed access connections in rural areas increased by 13.3% in the year to June 30, up from 1 million to 1.1 million. Although this growth was greater than the 4.2% for urban connections, there were still considerably more of the latter (3 million) as of the end of June this year.
In terms of access infrastructure, FTTH connections, at 0.3 million, tripled in the year to June 30, while coaxial cable fell by 17.3% to 0.5 million. UTP/FTP cable connections grew slightly, to 2.2 million, while connections over copper wires (xDSL) reached 1 million.
UTP/FTP accounted for 54% of fixed broadband connections, followed by xDSL (24%) and coaxial cable (12%).
