Russian authorities are losing the war against piracy, at least in the eyes of the public.
ComNews and AKTR report that in a meeting between Roskomnadzor, IT companies and copyright holders to discuss the main problems encountered in the application of the anti-piracy package, the most urgent issue was identified as “mirror”, or duplicate sites.
When offending sites are blocked by the authorities, such “mirror” sites are still found in other domains.
The authorities are also finding it increasingly difficult to block pirated content that can be accessed through applications installed on mobile devices.
These applications are not subject to legislation and to remove the software, such as in the case of Google Play, is not always possible.
Two working groups will now be set up to look into these problems and the first results of their findings will be made public at a meeting in February.
