Romania: exclusive new TV industry stats

November 27, 2015 08.06 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

UPC RomaniaThe number of TV distribution companies active in Romania this year is 13% lower than in 2014, when the total stood at 317.

According to the latest Media Expres Yearbook, this represents a continuing trend, with there having been 382 in 2013 and as many as 630 in 2008. It adds that the net turnover in the TV distribution industry was €723.6 million in 2013, compared to €697.7 million in 2012.

Meanwhile, its losses in 2014 were €4 million lower than a year earlier, when they amounted to €65.6 million, but still disappointing compared to the €38.9 million posted in 2012.

The Media Expres Yearbook, which will be published in December, will describe the landscape of cable TV distribution in Romania, amounting to 273 cable TV, IPTV and DTH companies. Their cumulative turnover stood at €756.6 million, and cumulative €61 million, in 2014.

It will also publish turnovers for the TV market in Romania, looking at 56 companies active on the market in the period September- October 2015, operating over 90 satellite broadcasting licences. They recorded a total turnover of €475.7 million in 2014, with total revenues, including such items as grants, capital injections, loans and bank interests, amounting to €499.5 million. The balance of the total TV industry indicates a loss of €48 million.

Media Expres notes that in the case of TV turnover, the book did not take into account companies like Orange and RCS&RDS, which have satellite TV licences and earn most of their income on communications and subscriber services. Reports by the Ministry of Finance, from which the information is obtained, do not provide turnover broken down by activity.

The TV turnover also does not include foreign TV services with Romanian versions, such as History, Disney, Cartoon Network, Discovery, AXN, Paramount and Diva.

Meanwhile, the TV distribution companies stats do not include Telekom Romania and Orange Romania, RCS, UPC and others that offer bundles of services, including telephony and internet.
