Eir may have the fastest broadband in Ireland, but it still has a long way to go when it comes to building its TV services.
However, at 43,000 customers, eir Vision is subscribed to by 24% of the customer base. In contrast Virgin Media Ireland has 505,000 customers.
For Eir, rumoured to be in the running to purchase premium channel Setanta Sports in Ireland, it is the long game. EBITDA for the quarter ending September 30, 2015 was €120 million, an increase of 6%, underpinned by a strong performance in mobile.
“Our investment continues as we build a best in class fixed and mobile network for Ireland,” said CEO Richard Moat. “We already deliver high speed broadband to 1.3 million homes and businesses across the country and we continue to enable additional communities as we progress towards our target of reaching 1.9 premises. Take up of fibre broadband continues at pace as we recorded our strongest quarter to date. This has underpinned growth in the total number of broadband customers on our network.”
The limited 1 gigabit per second (1,000Mbps) is offered through fibre-to-the-home technology.
