The European Commission has given its approval to the $77 billion (€72bn) acquisition of Broadcom by Avago Technologies.
Both Avago and Broadcom are well-known manufacturers of chipsets for the television sector, alongside mobile phones, computers, cars, medical equipment, identification systems and aerospace equipment.
Commissioner Margrethe Vestager, in charge of competition policy, said: “Thanks to very good cooperation with the companies the Commission has been able to approve this multi-billion dollar takeover within a very short space of time while preserving effective competition in this crucial high-technology sector.”
Concern over Avago’s position in the so-called ‘switch chip” market were addressed after Avago agreed to enter into commercial agreements with other switch chip manufacturers.
