Sky News captures virtual reality report

November 19, 2015 11.13 Europe/London By Julian Clover

Virtual Reality MigrantsSky News has filmed its first virtual reality news report, adding a new dimension of its coverage of the migrants crisis.

The report was a collaboration with Jaunt Inc, known for its work in cinematic virtual reality, and in which Sky has invested since 2013. Reporter Alistair Bunkall, Sky News cameraman Adam Murch and Kenny Voelker from Jaunt. went to Greece to film the report, which is being promoted on-air, alongside an explanation of the cardboard viewer that can be used to experience the virtual reality content.

John McAndrew, Director of News Output, Sky News, said: “This new technology has enhanced our story telling, giving our viewers a deeper and richer visual experience. For the first time we can take viewers to the scene of a news story in a way that is more immersive than ever. The report gives viewers a unique perspective on the migration crisis. By taking them inside the tents where people are living and seeing what it’s like to stand on a crowded beach with possessions scattered along the shoreline, you get a new understanding of what is happening.”

To view the report, it’s necessary to download the Jaunt app for iOS or Android, and use headphones to listen to the audio.
