There is a debate on whether to launch UPC TV Apps in markets where Horizon is already up and running, according to Arpad Jordan, CTO, Central and Eastern Europe, Liberty Global.
However, speaking at the Digital TV Central & Eastern Europe conference in Warsaw, he added that the company definitely plans to use the technology in the future.
Even so, Horizon is its flagship product and Liberty needs to deliver it in every market.
Jordan also said that Liberty remains committed to STBs for its cable and DTH services for now as they are part of its core strategy. However, he also conceded that there could be some deviation, with keeping connectivity and entertainment in the same box maybe not always being the case in the future.
Furthermore, Liberty remains committed to its own UI.
Commenting on the success of UPC TV Apps in Hungary, which has been added to legacy STBs, Jordan said that more than 50% of the legacy STB subscriber base has already accessed YouTube, with more than 50% of them having become repeat visitors. Concurrency has been steadily increasing for 18 months now and 2 million watching minutes a day have been reached.
