Magyar Telekom has reached an agreement with the Hungarian government on expanding broadband access.
Quoting the state secretary Ákos Kara, speaking to the MTI news agency, BBJ reports that the telco will make services available to an additional 230,000 homes at its own expense in return for the government not providing EU funds to competitors operating in the same areas.
Kara added that the build, which will offer access speeds of at least 30 Mbps, should be completed by April 2018.
He also said that similar agreements, providing a further 270,000 homes with broadband access, will be signed in the next two weeks with UPC, Invitel, Tarr and 70 other operators.
The agreements will significantly reduce the number of homes in Hungary – currently believed to number up to 1 million – still without broadand access.
