The French government is raising the licence fee as well as the ISP tax in order to increase the funding of the public broadcasters.
The annual TV licence fee will go up by €1 from the start of 2016, to €137, which is according to the rate of inflation. The government can adjust the fee within the current media law. The licence fee goes to the two public broadcasters, France Televisions and Radio France.
The licence fee continues to be taken on regular TV sets, as the government has shelved plans to apply the TV licence to devices other than TVs – at least for the time being.
At the same time, the government will also increase the controversial Cope Tax on ISPs from 0.9% to 1.2%.
However, according to culture minister Fleur Pellerin, she does not expect the ISPs to raise their prices due to the fierce competition in the French broadband access market.
