Korean CE manufacturer Samsung has decided to shut down the Boxee project and lay off the entire staff.
Samsung acquired Boxee in July 2013 and integrated it into a project that was internally known as “Perfect Experience,” or PX, according to Variety.
The former Boxee team was working on a project to replace the traditional TV remote control with a tablet-like device. The re-invented remote control would include access to linear channels, on-demand and catch-up Tv services in a single device.
Originally Boxee was developed as a software platform, it later launched its own set-top box, pitching the Tel-Aviv start up against other devices including the Apple TV box and Roku. It has also developed its own cloud based PVR, known as Cloudee. These services were later shut down by Samsung.
