Broadband stands out for Virgin Media

August 5, 2015 10.49 Europe/London By Julian Clover

virgin_modem_reverseVirgin Media has seen its best RGU performance in five years with 19,000 more new services taken in the second quarter compared to 12 months ago.

But TV subscribers continue to fall in both the UK and Ireland (UPC), even if per subscriber revenues are going up, and churn across the board is going down. There’s been a 40% reduction in subscriber losses year over year.

TiVo in the UK and Horizon in Ireland increased by 91,000 during Q2 to 2.9 million and that represents 71% of the enhanced video base.

As of June 30, 2015 there were 3,736,000 video subscribers in the UK and 318,900 in Ireland. There were 4,570,300 UK internet customers, 3,733,700 in Ireland.

The combined total of 12,538,500 of RGUs is up from 12,294,300 at the same point in 2014.

Operating income nearly doubled to £104 million for Q2 and increased by 148% in the first half.

The proportion of the subscriber base taking ‘ultrafast’ broadband speeds of 100 Mbps or above has also doubled year on year to 40% of the base.

Regional marketing campaigns have been launched in Manchester and Leeds under the Project Lightning network extension plans.

There has also been success from cross-selling more postpaid mobile services. The Freestyle mobile proposition has seen a 36,000 increase in postpaid mobile subscriptions, however significant price increases have kept these below 2014 levels.
