Digital UK chief executive Jonathan Thompson has warned that DTT must prepare itself for the loss of frequencies to the mobile sector.
In the organisation’s annual report, Thompson said the squeezing of the Freeview line-up of channels into less capacity would inevitably pose major technical challenges.
“‘Digital terrestrial television must and will evolve to embrace the change and opportunities that new technology and internet connectivity are bringing. Only services that adapt will continue to be successful. This will be our priority focus at Digital UK over the months and years ahead.”
Freeview’s greatest problem could be the 100,000 homes that may need to replace their rooftop aerials.
75% of homes continue to enjoy the free-to-air terrestrial platform, with Freeview Play developing a new connected TV platform, with the first TV displays and receivers beginning to become available.
