As the first German cable operator Pepcom wants to enable competitors to use its infrastructure to offer high-speed internet access.
ADSL providers who can currently only offer maximum data rates of 16Mbps due to their network structure would then be able to sell up to 200Mbps internet access to their customers.
“We want to utilise our networks’ capacity faster and better,” Pepcom CEO Uwe Nickl explained the move in German business magazine Wirtschaftswoche.
Through the opening of its networks, Pepcom wants to win more internet customers among the around 800,000 households it serves with cable TV. The company is – through its subsidiary Kabel&Medien Service (KMS) – market leader in Munich with 324,000 households served and also has strong footholds in Frankfurt, Nuremberg and Leipzig.
