Al Jazeera’s BeIN Sports is close to acquiring Digitürk, with a deal possible in the next few weeks.
According to Bloomberg and Turkish Football, it would see Çukurova Holding and Providence Equity sell their respective 53% and 47% stakes for a reported $1.5 billion.
In the case of Çukurova, the money would be used to pay back the government’s Savings Deposit Insurance Fund (TMSF), which seized the holding’s assets as compensation for unpaid debts in 2013.
Digitürk has over 2.7 million subscribers and holds the lucrative rights to the Turkish Football League until the 2016-17 season.
Those to the Turkish Süper Lig, which it has held since 2001, are on an exclusive basis and worth $560 million a year.
