German cable operator Unitymedia will set up public internet hotspots in selected cities within its coverage area in federal states North-Rhine Westphalia, Hessen and Baden-Württemberg.
The free-of-charge service will be offered in up to 100 towns by the end of the year, the company announced at German cable, satellite and broadband fair ANGA COM. The Wi-Fi spots will cover highly frequented streets and squares as well as restaurants, shops and Unitymedia stores.
Users have to register once per SMS and can then surf the net with a data rate of up to 10Mbps until they have reached the 24 hour limit of 100MB after which they can continue with 64Kbps.
In parallel, Unitymedia offers PowerSpots to companies such as hairdressers, doctor’s surgeries, pubs and cafés.
