Vivendi is investigating the idea of a subscription VOD service in Europe and Japan.
The Canal+ owner would combine music and video on demand in a combined subscription service. Quoting industry sources, the BFM TV website said that rather than copy the business model deployed by Netflix, it would instead run the dual service under the Universal Music brand.
Canal already runs VOD services, including the successful CanalPlay (pictured), which already has 600,000 subscribers in the French domestic market.
International players including Amazon, Maxdome and HBO have already shown there to be room for more than one player in the streaming video market.
However, Vivendi’s foray into the German market has been mixed. The co-founders of the Watchever service, launched in Germany in January 2013, left in September 2014 amid a dispute about the overall direction of the platform that is said to have less than 200,000 subscribers from a high of half a million.
