Magyar Telekom has welcomed the “calm times” that have followed since the Hungarian government decided to do some brainstorming in the wake of its controversial ‘internet tax’ proposal.
In a wide-ranging interview with Portfolio, Christopher Mattheisen, the company’s chief executive, said that the cabinet’s decision to go easy on the tax would help the telco’s network development plans and contribute to the development on broadband in Hungary.
However, Magyar Telekom already has to pay between HUF30-35 billion (€91-113 million) in taxes each year.
Mattheisen added that the telco plans to increase the number of households it is able to provide broadband access to to 2.2 million, or over half the country’s total, by the end of this year.
