Russia’s Rostelecom has constructed a multi-service network employing Passive Optical Network (PON) technology that covers a total of one million households in St Petersburg and the Leningrad region.
It allows subscribers to access a number of services including broadband at up to 200 Mbps and IPTV offering 200 TV channels in digital and HD quality.
Rostelecom began constructing a fibre-optic infrastructure in St Petersburg in 2008.
It is the first company in Russia to provide services based on PON technology and they are already used by 300,000 of its subscribers.
