Hungary is considering the possibility of introducing a tax specifically aimed at “multinational internet based companies”.
Speaking at the Media Hungary conference in Siófok and quoted by BBJ, Tamás Deutsche, the government’s commissioner on online digital developments (InternetKon), referred to a 20-item questionnaire in which one of those questions asked about such a tax, which would be used the support Hungarian language content and services.
He answered it on a point-by-point basis, in the affirmative, but being up to market players to resolve the issue among themselves; Hungary should support a EU or even wider regulation; and until such a regulation is created Hungary should reach agreement with Hungarian players.
However, he also said he did not believe it was a problem and did not want to answer the question.
Deutsche is heading up a national online consultation set up by the government following large-scale public protests over a proposed internet usage tax.
