BBC Earth launches in Romania

April 15, 2015 08.09 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul & Julian Clover

BBC Brit:BBC EarthBBC Worldwide has launched its new genre brand BBC Earth as a linear channel in Romania as sister channel BBC Brit debuts as the most watched international channel in Norway.

Localised in the Romanian language, BBC Earth is being offered to subscribers of Telekom, RCS&RDS and Digital Cable Systems (DCS).

The rollout plan for BBC Worldwide follows the recent debut of BBC Earth and the factual entertainment brand BBC Brit in Poland.

Commenting on the Romanian launch, Paul Dempsey, president for global markets at BBC Worldwide said: “We know that viewers across Central and Eastern Europe love our premium factual content, and with the launch of BBC Earth here we are excited to bring the most amazing sights, stories and characters from the natural world into millions of livings rooms across Romania.”

BBC Brit made its international debut as a TV channel in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland on Monday April 13, 2015. The channel got off to a great start providing strong overnight figures for launch day and becoming the most watched international channel in Norway.

Replacing BBC Entertainment, BBC Brit has beaten its predecessors average share almost five-fold in its key 21-50 demographic. This made it the 8th biggest channel overall on Tuesday with a higher share than Norwegian brands TV2 Zebra, VOX and Viasat4, amongst others.

BBC Earth channel launched in the Nordics on Tuesday, April 14.

BBC Brit and BBC Earth are available in HD and sit alongside BBC Lifestyle and BBC HD across the Nordic market. They have replaced BBC Entertainment and BBC Knowledge.

BBC Brit and BBC Earth will launch in the Netherlands in May.
