Hungary may review special taxes imposed on telcos, including the incumbent Magyar Telekom.
Quoted by Portfolio, Mihály Varga, the economy minister, said that such a move was being made possible by economic growth and improved public finances.
However, it adds that the idea was also mooted in February 2014 but came to nothing. Indeed, it almost led to an increase in the tax through the imposition of another levy, known as the ‘internet tax’.
Magyar Telekom’s contribution towards the telecom tax and a levy on utility infrastructure in the last few years amounts to between HUF31-33 billion (€103.6-110.2 million).
