Chris Dziadul Reports: Invitation to Bratislava

March 26, 2015 20.15 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Broadband TV News and Telenor Satellite Broadcasting will be hosting a special event in the Slovak capital, Bratislava, on May 6.

On a visit to the city last month I saw for myself the incredible changes that are currently taking place in the country’s TV industry. I was also made aware of the many challenges that the industry faces, along with the subjects that of relevance to its leading players.

One of those subjects, and the theme of our event, is the development of HD services. Slovakia, as much as any market in the CEE region, has been quick to embrace HD channels, with leading broadcasters now offering most if not all of their services in the format.

However, with that has come the question of distribution costs, with some broadcasters asking operators to pay for the carriage of their channels.
Needless to say, this is a contentious issue and one we will focus on.

Yet at the same time, there will be many other talking points. They will include the distribution of leading Czech channels, often illegally, in Slovakia and how this is impacting on local broadcasters.

Also up for discussion will be the rapid growth of the Slovak TV market, which is now clearly evident in its DTH sector. Already one of the most dynamic in the region, it will soon be served by no fewer than six platforms.

The Bratislava Business Briefing, which will be held at the Crowne Plaza on Wednesday, May 6, will bring together representatives of most of the leading players in Slovakia’s TV industry.

At the time of going to press, these include Slovak Telekom, UPC Broadband Slovakia, Markiza, Joj and Radio Television Slovakia, along with the pioneering company Antik Telecom.

Also present will be Deutsche Telekom, a key player in the market through its Slovak subsidiary, to provide an overview of its regional strategy.

For further information about the Bratislava Business Briefing, entry to which is free, and to register, please click on this link.

We look forward to welcoming you on May 6.
