The Polish national commercial broadcaster Polsat has applied for a new channel licence to the country’s National Broadcasting Council (KRRiT).
Press.pl reports it is for a satellite-delivered service named Polsat World that would be aimed at Poles living abroad.
It adds that it would replace Polsat 2, which is currently available in the US, Australia and New Zealand.
However, Polsat 2 would continue to be available to viewers in Poland, though in a modified form.
Polsat planned to launch a channel named Polsat International a few years ago.
Although it obtained a licence in 2009, this was withdrawn two years later after the channel had failed to launch.
TVN, Polsat’s main commercial rival, has operated a channel named TVN international since 2004 and currently has plans to launch a second service – TVN International Extra – aimed at Poles living abroad.
Meanwhile, the public broadcaster TVP has operated TVP Polonia since 1993.
