The Spanish government has obliged Vodafone to hand back frequencies allocated for its mobile telephony service.
The British operator purchased the range in 2011 for €13 million. Financial daily Expansion reports the Ono acquisition means it has exceeded the frequency cap established in Summer 2011.
While Vodafone had reached the limit, rivals Movistar and Orange were a fraction below.
Vodafone did have the option of selling the capacity to another operator, but will Jazztel currently in play with Orange, there was no other option but to return the frequencies.
