TV Südbaden, a local TV channel serving southwestern German city Freiburg and the surrounding region, has ceased its broadcasts on January 16, 2015.
The decision was made by the shareholders of operating company Funkhaus Freiburg following intense consultations with local media authority LFK, according to a statement.
Despite the synergies achieved in the collaboration with successful radio station baden.fm which is also produced at Funkhaus Freiburg, it has not been possible to run the TV operation in an economically viable way, according to the statement.
“In the past 10 years, media usage as extremely changed,” said managing director Christian Noll. “The importance of a local evening news programme produced with great effort has extremely dropped compared with fast video news on the internet. This is shown by the two well used online offerings tv-suedbaden.de and baden.fm.”
TV Südbaden which launched on September 15, 2001 has been available on cable and via satellite on Astra (19.2° East) as a window on Rhein-Neckar Fernsehen (RNF). On the internet, news from the region will continue to be posted.
