KPN will pul the plug out of its digital TV product Snow in June 2015. Meanwhile, Mobistar has launched its alternative TV service in Charleroi.
KPN is blaming the Belgian government for the failure of its digital TV product Snow, which attracted only 35,000 customers – not enough to make a viable business model.
According to the telecom operator, Belgian regulator BIPT has set the wholesale pricing for access on incumbent networks (Belgacom, Telenet and VOO), too high in order to make a profitable business.
KPN also said that current regulation makes switching providers very difficult, which could lead to consumers choosing another provider to have no internet access during the switch-over. KPN launched Snow was launched in February 2014.
Meanwhile, Mobistar has rolled out its digital TV service on the cabinet of Charleroi. The operator will launch its service nationwide if and when BIPT will reduce its wholesale pricing for third-party access to incumbent networks.
Mobistar has started proceedings to enter the digital TV market last January.
