More than 70,0000 Telenet customers have joined the call to action by Belgian consumer organisation Test-Aankoop to protest a 5% price hike on its prices.
According to Test-Aankoop the current duopoly of Telenet and Belgacom/Proximus has led to higher prices than those in countries with more competition. A basic triple-play package starts at EUR65 a month, compared with EUR40 or lower in other countries. “It looks like Telenet is taking advantage of the fact that there is not enough competition.”
In a related development, KPN has decided to withdraw its digital TV product Snow from the Belgian market, citing regulatory issues.
The recent price increase follows an earlier decision by Telenet to make the MPEG2 SD Digicorders obsolete, forcing its owners to upgrade to a new cable tuner or PVR.
