The EBU has summarised its view on UHD TV, which it feels should offer “not more pixels but better pixels”.
In a largely technology-focused presentation, Hans Hoffman, senior manager, EBU concluded that it was firstly about increasing awareness that immersive UHD TV is more than resolution.
Secondly, for Phase 2 technology hurdles in the chain are to be overcome and the best cost-quality ratio found.
Thirdly, standards are needed, namely HDR, HFR, Studio Interfaces, compression, HDMIx and HEVC.
Fourthly, the EBU and its members lead several actions on the requirements.
Fifthly, he asked for a name to be found for Phase 2 since “UHD is already used”.
Sixthly, there is no value for advanced technologies without content and consumer availability, and finally, all stakeholders need to be involved.
Like previous speakers in the conference, Hoffman discouraged the use of the term 4K, preferring instead UHD.
He also spoke about the UHD Forum and FAME Action 2014.
A workshop, involving over 60 European participants, took place in Lucca in June.
There was also a meeting with the European Commission in November.
