Swisscom attacks Netflix with SVOD service

December 2, 2014 11.06 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

30004_Teleclub_Play2_ORIGINALSwitzerland’s national telco Swisscom has launched a subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service offering movies, TV series, documentaries, sports and children’s programmes for a flat monthly fee of CHF12.90 (€10.70).

Teleclub Play which is available to customers of multiscreen service Swisscom TV 2.0 contains around 5,000 titles – besides international productions also German-language and Swiss content. By the end of the year, the stock is to grow to around 7,000 titles.

The lineup includes, for example, US series like Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Lost and The Big C, blockbusters like The Expendables, Silver Linings, Gangs of New York, Pulp Fiction and Burn after reading as well as Swiss movies like Nachtzug nach Lissabon, Grounding – die letzten Tage der Swissair and Die Schweizermacher.

29998_Teleclub_Play_Konvergenz_ORIGINALTeleclub Play which Swisscom operates in collaboration with its pay-TV subsidiary Teleclub is initially available via TV, PC and laptop with apps for smartphones and tablets from Apple (iOS) to follow in mid-December 2014.

During the introduction period, all new Teleclub Play customers will get the first three months free of charge. The special offer is valid until January 31, 2015.

Teleclub Play is currently available in German-speaking Switzerland and will be rolled out to the French-speaking part of the country by summer 2015. Swisscom says it evaluates an introduction in Italian-speaking Switzerland.

In June 2014, it emerged that Swisscom wants to counter US streaming provider Netflix with its own SVOD service. Netflix launched in Switzerland in mid-September 2014.
