Digital UK has published the technical details for the new Freeview connected service with major build contracts going to Arqiva, DTG Testing and Digital TV Labs.
The new connected platform will build on Freeview’s existing backwards EPG – separate from YouView, which is largely accepted to be driven by its telco shareholders rather than its PSB founders.
Arqiva’s Connected Solutions business, established following the merger of Capablue with Arqiva’s existing hybrid TV operation, has been awarded the contract to run the metadata. This includes catch-up content from the BBC iPlayer, ITV Player and 4oD.
The technical specification has also been released for manufacturers, and others, looking to build connected Freeview product. It’s available from the Digital UK website.
Charles Constable, managing director of Digital Platforms at Arqiva, said: ‘Arqiva is committed to ensuring Freeview remains a strong and competitive player in the changing TV landscape. The metadata system we are developing will form the backbone of the new platform and sustain its value for years to come.’
The DTG said its Product Test Suite will cover the user journey including regionalisation, the correct use of broadcast and IP metadata, and correct handling of broadcast signalling.
Launched in February, the public service broadcasters are planning to use the new connected platform to ensure widespread take-up of their catch up and connected services.
