There will be 12 UltraHD channels operational worldwide on various satellites, according to Hans-Pieter Schmitt, Eutelsat Germany.
Ever since the satellite operator launched the first 4K Ultra HD channel in January 2013 things have developed quickly, “The development goes faster than with HD, 4K will also come on DTT and IPTV.”
There are many forces now driving the development of 4K, including the equipment manufacturers and content owners. The current drives are Asia and North America, with Europe following behind.
Sky has been testing UHD and will certainly be one of the drivers as pay TV providers are expected to be the first to offer the new standard on a regular basis as part of their bouquets.
