EC opens public consultation on UHF band

November 21, 2014 15.39 Europe/London By Robert Briel

Ruffled European flagThe European Commission’s Radio Spectrum Policy Group (RSPG) has opened a public consultation on its draft opinion on a long-term strategy on the future use of the UHF band (470-790 MHz) in the EU.

Public consultation on the Draft RSPG Opinion on a long-term strategy on the future use of the UHF band (470-790 MHz) in the European Union.

RSPG intends, in particular, to select at its next meeting a deadline for making the band 694 – 790 MHz available for effective use for electronic communications services. Two dates are under consideration i.e. 2020 and 2022.

For the rest of the UHF band (470-694 MHz), the RSPG recommends preserving access to DTT at least until 2030, a timeframe introduced in September in the report submitted to the European Commission by Pascal Lamy. This band could be opened to other services by countries that wish to do so, as long as they ensure the provision of TV services.

The consultation is open for submittals until January 12, 2015.
