Google Play Movies & TV has been added to Roku’s channel store in the US, UK, Ireland and Canada.
Google Play let viewers buy and rent movies and TV shows directly through the Roku set-top box, and offers new releases such as 22 Jump Street, Into the Storm and Let’s Be Cops in SD or HD before they are available on DVD.
Google Play Movies & TV is available in the channel store now on current-generation Roku players. Roku TV support is coming soon.
The Roku announcement comes just after Google unveiled its Nexus Player, a streaming set-top box that will run Android TV and will be available in the US later this month for a $99 list price.
The market for HDMI sticks and streaming STBs now consists of Google, with its Chromescast stick and Nexus Player, Amazon with its Fire TV stick and box, and Roku, also with both sticks and players. And there is Apple TV, which is only a streaming STB, but also includes casting functions.
