Opposition to Hungary’s decision to impose what will be the world’s first “internet tax” is growing.
Local media say that a demonstration in Budapest on Sunday (October 26) attracted, by various accounts, between 10,000 and 40,000 people.
Another demonstration is due to take place today (October 28).
The tax, due to come into effect next year, will require ISPs to pay HUF150 (€0.49) for every gigabite of data used.
However, as a concession the government has said the new levy may be capped.
The European Commission has spoken out against the planned tax, with its VP Nellie Kroes encouraging people to protest against it.
