Fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) is becoming increasingly popular in Spain, with the number of lines more than doubling in the year to August 2014.
Data produced by the regulator CNMC shows that as of August FTTH accounted for 1,098,110 of the country’s 12,598,467 fixed broadband connections.
Twelve months earlier, there were 484,662 FTTH connections, while the fixed broadband total was 11,890,412.
Telefónica continues to account for the lion’s share of the FTTH sector – 90.2% in August this year.
Meanwhile, DSL connections in Spain stood at 9,444,295 in August, down for the fifth month in a row but little changed on the 9,408,176 a year earlier.
The market was split 50/50 between Telefónica and other providers, though the incumbent continued to gradually lose share.
Broadband cable connections stood at 2,056,062 in August this year, up from 1,997.574 a year earlier but down from 2,071,843 in May.
