The majority of Germans want telecommunications companies like Deutsche Telekom to cover the costs of nationwide provision of broadband internet access.
The state is also to take over responsibility, according to a survey conducted by German statistics portal Statista among 1,004 people between 14 and 49 years of age.
Almost half of the people asked (43%) want telcos to undertake the investment, followed by 36% expecting this from the state. Interestingly, almost nobody opted for websites accumulating lots of traffic such as YouTube to cover the costs. Around 10% say that the availability of nationwide broadband access is not necessary.
The cost to provide nationwide broadband internet access across Germany including rural regions is estimated to amount to a total of €20 billion.
