Bulgaria’s controversial transition to digital broadcasting will once more come under the spotlight later this month, when the Court of Justice in Luxembourg hears a case brought against the country by the European Commission.
Capital reports that this will come nearly three and a half years after Bulgaria was firs informed the Commission would open an infringement procedure, having decided the award of DTT multiplex licences had been deeply flawed.
However, it adds that the failure of the digitisation process in Bulgaria is something no court can solve.
This is highlighted by the fact that at present viewers are only six FTA channels – bTV, Nova TV, Diema Family +1,TV7, News 7 and Bulgaria on Air – up and running despite no fewer than seven multiplexes having been licensed.
With the clock now ticking to the court hearing in Luxembourg – it will officially take place on September 24 – Novinite reports that the Bulgarian incumbent BTC has informed the Competition Protection Commission (CPC) that it plans to buy NURTS, the company that operates Bulgaria’s digital broadcasting infrastructure.
